IFIP distinguishes three types of institutional membership: Country Representative Members, Members at Large and Associate Members. These are descripted and the differences explained in the IFIP Statutes and Bylaws, in particular Article 4 of the Statutes and Article 2 of the Bylaws.

The type of organization that can apply for membership is a wide variety and includes national or international societies of individual computer scientists / ICT professionals, associations or federations of such societies, government institutions / government related organizations, national or international research institutes or consortia,  universities, Academy of Sciences, companies, national or international associations or federations of companies.

The criteria for membership are described in the Statutes Article 4 and the application procedure for IFIP membership is described in Article 2 of the Bylaws. A formal Letter of Application should be sent to the IFIP President (c/o the address of the IFIP Secretariat). Such a letter should be accompanied by the following documents: the constitution of the organization, a list of financial resources, the names and titles of its officers, number of members and a brief outline of its history. These documents should be in English and are intended for review by the IFIP Admissions Committee. It is very desirable that an electronic copy (an attachment or reference to an URL) of these documents is provided. The Admissions Committee will prepare and submit its recommendations to the IFIP General Assembly, which has the mandate to decide on the admission of new Members. The IFIP General Assembly will decide on the scale of annual dues.

We recommend that all IT professionals and practitioners interested in IFIP work contact the respective IFIP Member Computer Society and / or the Technical Committee or Working Group chairs of their interest.

IFIP Member societies nominate their representatives to the 13 IFIP TCs.

WGs consist of technical experts and membership is not restricted to those who belong to an IFIP Member Society. Individuals who are interested to join a specific WG should submit an application (with a c.v. including professional data) to the respective WG Chair.
