Formally IFIP is a non-governmental, non-profit umbrella organization for national societies working in the field of information processing. It was established in 1960 under the auspices of UNESCO as a result of the first World Computer Congress held in Paris in 1959.

IFIP is incorporated in Austria by decree of the Austrian Foreign Ministry (20th September 1996, GZ 1055.170/120-I.2/96) granting IFIP the legal status of a non-governmental international organisation under the Austrian Law on the Granting of Privileges to Non-Governmental International Organisations (Federal Law Gazette 1992/174).

Mission

The International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) is the global non-profit umbrella organization of societies of ICT professionals that aims at achieving a worldwide professional and socially responsible development and application of information and communication technologies.

This goal is accomplished by enhancing international cooperation amongst individuals, national and international organizations in all aspects of research, development and application of ICT, by disseminating and exchanging information, by educating and enhancing public understanding, by increasing professionalism in the ICT workforce and by promoting global digital equity. IFIP is in a unique position to do so through its membership structure and its lines of activities.

Strategic Aims

IFIP provides a global platform to:

Advance information and communication technologies (ICT) by:

  1. Supporting the advancement of knowledge,
  2. Fostering excellence in research and development,
  3. Organizing international events,
  4. Disseminating high quality ICT related information through a variety of appropriate means,
  5. Promoting the adoption of global standards,
  6. Supporting policies that stimulate research.

Advance the responsible application of ICT, by:

  1. Promoting responsible use of ICT,
  2. Promoting awareness of ethical issues,
  3. Promoting robust international legal frameworks,
  4. Promoting public understanding of ICT,
  5. Providing policy statements on socially relevant topics and developments.

Advance the role, position and effectiveness of professional ICT societies, by:

  1. Sharing knowledge, experiences and good practices,
  2. Advocating the role of its’ member societies,
  3. Providing opinions on important developments,
  4. Cooperating in activities,
  5. Acting as the representative global body for societies of individual ICT professionals.

Advance professionalism in ICT, by:

  1. Promoting appropriate bodies of knowledge for ICT practitioners,
  2. Promoting common skills and competencies frameworks,
  3. Promoting accreditation and certification,
  4. Promoting high quality ICT education,

 Advance digital equity, by:

  1. Promoting accessibility of ICT,
  2. Promoting good practices,
  3. Promoting and enhancing appropriate access to knowledge and experiences,
  4. Organizing and contributing to activities aimed at achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs),
  5. Organizing and contributing to activities aimed at achieving the goals of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)

  1. Promote open and excellent science, independent of any   business or government, in information processing.
  2. Communicate and publicise knowledge on information processing.
  3. Promote professionalism, excellence, digital equity, ethics and inclusion in ICT governance and application.
  4. Aim to be a leading, independent and influential voice of ICT, providing expert knowledge.
  5. Increase the value of membership.

Strategies to achieve Objectives # 1

Promote open and excellent science, independent of any business or government, in information processing, by

1.1  Fostering excellence and international cooperation.

1.2   Maintaining IFIP’s expertise in key aspects of ICT and expanding this   expertise by integrating emerging areas into existing or new Working   Groups (WGs).

1.3  Supporting young ICT researchers.

1.4   Supporting Technical Committees (TCs) and WG’s in quality assurance   at IFIP events and publications.

1.5  Contributing and promoting ICT educational guidelines.

Strategies to achieve Objectives # 2

Communicate and publicise knowledge on information processing, by:

2.1  Publishing and distributing the results of open science, especially in   digital libraries such as IFIP digital library and other channels.

2.2  Supporting TCs & WGs to organise a broad range of conferences and   other events.

2.3  Recognising excellence by conferring IFIP awards.

2.4  Collaborating with peer organisations.

Strategies to achieve Objectives # 3

Promote professionalism, excellence, digital equity, ethics and inclusion in ICT governance and application, by:

3.1   Enabling and supporting IFIP groups in projects that focus on   education, digital equity, ethics, inclusion and social accountability  .

3.2  Publishing reports and whitepapers from these groups.

3.3  Contributing to 3rd party organisations and events relevant to IFIP’s   Strategic Objectives.

3.4   Assisting TC, WG, conference organizers and conference attendees   with the management of ethics-related issues.

3.5  Supporting IFIP Member Societies (MSs) to improve public and   government awareness of the significant value of excellence, digital   equity, ethics, inclusion and employing qualified IT professionals, 

3.6  Encouraging MSs and other organisations to adapt IFIP Code of Ethics   for their organisation.

Strategies to achieve Objectives # 4

Aim to be a leading, independent & influential voice of ICT, providing expert knowledge, by:

 4.1  Disseminating reports, whitepapers, position statements and   declarations plus supporting documentation.

 4.2  Making IFIP’s knowledge available (via Website and direct contact) and   showcasing our expert volunteers (e.g. via webinars) to IFIP Member   Societies’ members, global partners, governments, other policy   agencies and interested general public.

 4.3  Inviting and securing sponsorship from organisations who could, where   appropriate, fund IFIP’s strategic projects.

 4.4  Supporting, promoting and co-organising flagship events, e.g. WCC, WSIS,   WITFOR.

 4.5  Increasing IFIP’s collaboration with UNESCO, UNCTAD and other   international agencies, engaging IFIP members if the goals match, to   encourage these agencies to reflect IFIP technical positions and IFIP   leadership and consult IFIP on ICT-related matters.  

Strategies to achieve Objectives # 5

Increase the value of membership of IFIP, by:

5.1  Enabling an IFIP website plus intranet collaboration facility, to be   designed, built and maintained, delivering current news and information   to IFIP members and the interested general public.

5.2  Publishing and distributing IFIP reports, position statements and “success   stories” with supporting information to every IFIP member, enabling each   IFIP Member Society (MS) to make productive use of IFIP materials. Also   allowing the interested general public to access this information (securely).

5.3  Enabling and encouraging MSs to share successful experiences of mutual   interest, e.g. creating an effective business model, how to engage in   government-funded projects, and raise their voice in the global community.

5.4  Encouraging MSs to gain benefits of global interaction   through closer   engagement with TCs and WGs within their country and   facilitating representation on TCs and WGs.

5.5  Encouraging members of MSs to participate in seminars, panels and   Task Forces and, where appropriate, ask MSs to host these events.
